Bluesky grows fivefold in Japan as some users leave X
Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform, is seeing significant growth in Japan as users move away from X, formerly known as Twitter.
According to Similarweb data, Bluesky’s active user numbers on Android in Japan grew fivefold between October 2023 and October 2024. Bluesky’s daily active user figures continued to increase through early November.
In contrast to the United States, where Bluesky adoption is linked to political changes, Japan’s growth is driven by functionality and privacy concerns.
X’s changes to its terms of service, like allowing AI training on user data and modifying the blocking feature, have faced criticism from Japanese users dissatisfied with more promotional content.
While X remains dominant in Japan, its daily active Android users dropped from 7.4 million to 6.7 million over the past year.
Although Bluesky has no office in Japan, the country is among its most active user bases. This community-driven growth was evident in events like the platform’s first-ever user meetup.
