Blackstone eyes $2b IPO for data center firm
Blackstone is considering a US IPO that could raise around US$2 billion for an acquisition vehicle focused on data centers, with formal marketing possible this month, people familiar with the matter said.
Goldman Sachs is leading the deal, with Citigroup and Morgan Stanley also involved, and Blackstone confidentially filed with US regulators earlier this year, the people said.
The firm had previously approached sovereign wealth funds and other institutions for early backing and is now looking to widen the offering to more investors, though the timing and structure may still change.
The vehicle would expand Blackstone’s push into AI infrastructure, a sector drawing heavy investment but also concerns that some large data center projects could become obsolete if technology shifts.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The US$2 billion IPO barely moves the needle for Blackstone
- The US$2 billion IPO sits beside a far larger platform, since Blackstone manages US$1.3 trillion in assets 1.
- QTS, the data center developer Blackstone bought for about US$10 billion in 2021, drove the biggest portfolio gains in 2025 1.
- The listing would cover only part of QTS’s buildout, since its pipeline reached about US$25 billion in committed projects as of Dec. 31, 2024 2.
- Blackstone says it scaled QTS from the fifth-largest to the largest data center provider in North America within three years of the 2021 deal 3.
The biggest risks come from power grids and water rights
- Tech shifts matter, yet power supply may cap data center growth after 2028 4.
- Some builders have heard utility power may not arrive for more than a decade 5.
- By 2030, today’s AI growth rate could use 731 million to 1.125 billion cubic meters of water a year, matching 6 million to 10 million Americans’ household use and raising regulatory risk 6.
- Blackstone calls AI a “top strategic risk” that could wipe out value in other holdings, so data center wins depend on AI creating more tenant value than it erodes 7.
