Blackstone buys majority stake in Greek ecommerce firm

Blackstone has agreed to buy a majority stake in Greek ecommerce marketplace Skroutz from CVC Capital Partners, expanding its presence in Greece.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal values Skroutz at 635 million euros (US$747 million) including debt.

Skroutz founders will sell part of their holdings, keep a stake, and continue running the company, with George Chatzigeorgiou staying on as CEO.

Skroutz sells more than 12 million products from about 9,000 merchants to roughly 2.5 million active users and has expanded into Cyprus, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Blackstone and CVC both hold several investment in Greece across infrastructure and consumer sectors.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Skroutz’s broader business and Greece’s digital push shaped Blackstone’s investment

  • Blackstone backed more than an online marketplace. Skroutz also runs logistics, fintech, or financial technology services, and retail media businesses 1.
  • Orders rose 379% in 2022 from 2020, which helped drive the company’s growth 2.
  • The timing also lines up with Greece’s economic recovery. The country has grown faster than the European average 1.
  • A mandatory electronic invoicing system for businesses starts in 2026. That rule could push more local merchants online and widen the seller base on the platform 1.

The transaction fits private equity’s approach to regional digital leaders

  • Blackstone is pairing a fast-growing digital platform with its physical assets in Greece, including airports and hotels, to build a broader regional portfolio 1.
  • Platforms that handle logistics and payments can be harder to displace than marketplace-only businesses. They also add revenue streams and lift profit per order 1.
  • This approach suggests ecommerce companies can use a strong home market to reach nearby countries with lower digital adoption through cross-border shipping 2.
