BlackRock builds AI analyst to scan company filings
BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest asset manager, is increasing its use of AI in its investment processes.
The firm has developed an AI research platform named “Asimov,” which is currently being used in its fundamental equity business, according to chief operating officer Rob Goldstein.
Goldstein described Asimov as a “virtual investment analyst.” He explained during BlackRock’s investor day in New York that the platform analyzes research notes, company filings, and emails to provide insights for portfolio management.
Goldstein said that the firm plans to implement Asimov more broadly across its operations by the next investor day.
AI tools are being increasingly adopted by fund managers for tasks that include data collection and investment decision-making.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI adoption in asset management is accelerating beyond experiments to core operations
BlackRock’s Asimov platform represents a significant shift in how the world’s largest asset manager is deploying AI, moving from experimental projects to core business functions.
This aligns with broader industry trends, as 78% of organizations reported using AI in 2024, showing widespread adoption beyond initial testing phases 1.
The finance sector has progressed considerably from early statistical models and expert systems of the 1980s to today’s sophisticated AI deployments that can autonomously analyze complex market data 2.
While AI has been discussed in finance for years, actual deployment in core investment processes has been limited. Quantitative hedge funds still manage only 1.3% of global equity capital, showing the significant growth potential 3.
BlackRock’s move signals that AI is transitioning from a peripheral technology to a central part of investment operations at major financial institutions, potentially changing how investment decisions are made.
2️⃣ AI systems are evolving from data processors to investment collaborators
BlackRock’s description of Asimov as a “virtual investment analyst” illustrates how AI is evolving beyond simple automation to become a collaborative tool for investment professionals.
The system processes research notes, company filings, and emails, tasks traditionally requiring significant human time, and transforms this information into actionable portfolio insights 4.
