BlackRock backs Dutch chipmaker firm Axelera AI in $250m round

European AI semiconductor company Axelera AI has raised over US$250 million in its latest funding round, led by Innovation Industries and supported by investors including BlackRock, SiteGround Capital, and existing backers such as Samsung Catalyst Fund and European Innovation Council Fund.

Since its founding in July 2021, Axelera has attracted more than US$450 million in total funding, grants, and debt.

The company, based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, has shipped its AI hardware to over 500 customers across industries like defense, manufacturing, and retail.

The new funds will support manufacturing scale-up, software development, and ecosystem expansion.

The company’s platforms, Europa and Metis, aim to simplify deployment of AI inference within real-world energy and thermal limits, promoting local data processing and privacy.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

A closer look at Axelera’s two-track chip plan

  • Axelera sells two chip lines, Metis and Europa. They serve different parts of edge AI, which runs models on devices instead of sending data to the cloud.
  • Metis is the older line. It reaches up to 214 TOPS (trillion operations per second, a common measure of AI inference performance) and goes up against Nvidia’s Jetson Orin for high-performance edge work such as multi-camera video analytics 1.
  • Europa is the newer processor. It delivers 629 TOPS within a 45-watt envelope and targets heavier workloads like large language models and computer vision, including robotics 2.
  • Both rely on Axelera’s Digital In-Memory Computing architecture. This design lowers power use by limiting data movement 3.
  • Each product uses the same Voyager software development kit (SDK). That choice can ease deployment when a single customer uses both for different needs 2.

Axelera aims at defense needs and European digital sovereignty

  • The funding round also backs a wider push for European strategic autonomy in a sensitive technology area.
  • Axelera ties its pitch to European sovereignty. Its VP of Strategy calls sovereignty a pillar of the company’s value proposition 3.
  • The company calls defense its fastest-growing market. It says its chips already run in binoculars, visors, drones, and vehicles for surveillance, image enhancement, and offline LLMs (large language models that run locally without an internet connection) 3.
  • Public programs sit alongside private fundraising. Axelera is involved in EuroHPC JU funding (the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, an EU initiative backing supercomputing and related technologies) via the DARE project to develop its Titania chiplet (a modular chip building block designed to be combined with others) 4.
  • This mix offers a path for European deep-tech ventures that want to pair venture capital with strategic public R&D support.
