General Compute, a US-based startup that rents AI computing capacity, has raised US$100 million in a series A round led by Blackbird Ventures and Abstract Ventures.

The round values the company at US$800 million post-money, up from US$60 million after its seed round in May.

General Compute buys inference chips from Nvidia competitors. It previously struck a US$400 million debt-financed deal to purchase chips from SambaNova.

The startup has also added Positron and Cerebras as suppliers, showing its strategy of building computing capacity with alternatives to Nvidia hardware.
