Black Myth: Wukong fuels China’s gaming boom
China’s video gaming market in August experienced a year-on-year increase of over 15% and a rise of 21% compared to the previous month, primarily driven by the launch of the highly anticipated title ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ last month.
The country’s industry revenues exceeded 33.64 billion yuan (approximately US$4.8 billion). International revenues from Chinese games rose 25% year-on-year to reach US$1.88 billion in August, up from US$1.5 billion in the previous year.
Developed by Hangzhou-based studio Game Science, ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ has sold over 20 million copies globally on the Steam platform.
Analysts from Newzoo anticipate that China’s video game market revenue could reach US$45 billion in 2023, positioning it closely behind the US market, which is projected to reach US$47 billion.
