Bitget adds USDT QR payments in SEA, Latin America

Bitget, a crypto exchange, said on May 8 it launched a QR code payment feature on its app.

The feature lets users in selected Southeast Asian and Latin American markets pay offline merchants with USDT through existing local payment networks.

The feature, called Scan to Pay, converts and settles the stablecoin in the background, which Bitget said means merchants do not need to change their systems.

The company linked the rollout to rising crypto use in both regions and said QR payments already reach 2.2 billion users globally.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Payment failures are the issue in emerging markets

  • Bitget is going after an economic need more than crypto hype.
  • Across Latin America and Southeast Asia, high inflation and currency strain have pushed many people toward stablecoins like USDT. USDT is a crypto token designed to maintain a stable value against the US dollar and has become a “de facto savings instrument” for many 1.
  • Spending those balances is harder. Traditional cross-border card payments often fail, with decline rates of 12% to 15% on emerging-market traffic 1.
  • The service plugs into local payment networks and supports QR-based offline merchant payments. Bitget has not publicly listed the national QR payment systems it uses in the provided source material.

Stablecoins are moving into national payment systems

  • Linking stablecoin spending to existing QR payment rails could widen everyday use 2.
  • Consumers can pay with QR codes while merchants receive local currency. That cuts exposure to crypto price swings and avoids new hardware for merchants 2.
  • Over time, this approach can blur the line between a crypto exchange and a payment processor, a company that handles transactions for merchants, which can draw regulatory scrutiny 3.
  • Compliance risk is high. Stablecoins account for nearly 95% of inflows to sanctioned entities and jurisdictions globally 4.
