Bitcoin slips as Middle East tensions rise
Bitcoin fell 1.6% in 24 hours to US$74,335 on April 20 after the US Navy seized an Iranian ship and Tehran reimposed controls on the Strait of Hormuz.
The drop was smaller than moves in oil and stock as markets repriced risk.
Ether slipped 2.6% to US$2,272, Solana fell 1.5% to US$84, and BNB was flat at US$618, while Brent crude rose 5.7% to US$95.50 a barrel,.
European gas futures jumped as much as 11%, S&P 500 futures fell 0.6%, and European equity futures pointed to a 1.2% drop.
The move reversed a three-week easing in war-risk premiums after Iran said the strait was open.
Traders are now watching whether bitcoin can stay above US$74,000 as bond yields and the US dollar rise.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Bitcoin’s small drop hints at a gap between big investors and everyday traders
- A one-day price dip only tells part of the story.
- When tensions first rose, Bitcoin fell with other assets tied to investor appetite for risk. More than US$128 billion left the crypto market’s total value 1.
- Over the next four weeks, digital asset investment products pulled in US$2.4 billion, which ended an earlier run of withdrawals 2.
- That buying came mostly from institutions while retail traders stayed on the sidelines. Capital.com said retail traders “did not rotate into Bitcoin. They rotated into oil” instead, and the number of unique oil traders jumped 328% 1.
Bitcoin is trading more like a macro asset than a pure tech bet
- The conflict is making investors rethink Bitcoin’s role. Its correlation with gold has reached 60%, which suggests institutions are treating it as a hedge during geopolitical stress 3.
- That can reverse fast. If the crisis cools, money that moved into Bitcoin for safety may head back to stocks and pull Bitcoin lower with gold 3.
- Bitcoin still tracks risk assets such as the Nasdaq, so it remains exposed to Federal Reserve policy and broader stock market mood 3.
- Over time, global liquidity appears to drive Bitcoin’s price more than conflict does, which makes it a hedge against currency debasement rather than a steady short-term shelter in geopolitical shocks 4.
