Bitcoin rises as US-Iran deal odds climb
Bitcoin rose 1.6% to US$77,500, ether gained 1.4%, and the CoinDesk 20 added 1.56% as traders tracked US-Iran talks in Doha and rising prediction market bets on a near-term agreement.
On Polymarket, a US-based crypto prediction market, the odds of a permanent deal this month rose to 37% from about 14% on Friday, with about US$178 million in volume.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission previously described the platform as an illegal unregistered facility for event-based binary options.
The proposed first phase is a memorandum of understanding focused on the Strait of Hormuz.
Broader talks would follow over 30 to 60 days. Highly enriched uranium and sanctions relief appear to remain part of a wider package rather than settled terms.
That matters for global markets because less disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could ease energy supply risks.
A Dallas Fed analysis said oil could fall back toward US$68 a barrel if the strait reopens after a quarter-long disruption.
Crude fell 5.4% to US$91.30 a barrel, gold rose 1.35% to US$4,570 an ounce, and the US Dollar Index slipped about 0.3%.
