Bitcoin nears $75k on massive short squeeze

Bitcoin climbed toward US$75,000 on March 16 in what analysts called a massive short squeeze that pushed prices higher.

About US$609 million in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated in 24 hours, including US$485.6 million in shorts, according to Coinglass data.

Bitcoin peaked near US$75,653 at about 10:00 p.m. ET before sliding to roughly US$74,300, while Ethereum and XRP also rose, according to The Block‘s price page.

US spot bitcoin ETFs saw US$767.3 million in net inflows last week and spot ether ETFs recorded US$160.8 million, SoSoValue data showed.

Analysts linked the rebound to spot flows and easing geopolitical and oil-driven inflation fears, but warned the rally’s durability depends on continued institutional inflows and macro developments.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The scale of institutional capital dwarfs weekly ETF flows

  • Weekly U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows came in at US$767.3 million, which is a little over 0.5% of the roughly US$135 billion held by U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs 1.
  • Fresh buying can move prices in the near term, while the much larger pool already parked in these funds shapes market structure 1.
  • Some of that activity may be a reshuffle within crypto products, with capital moving from older vehicles such as the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust and bitcoin futures ETFs into spot ETFs 2.
  • Gold funds have also seen withdrawals, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) had its biggest single-day outflow in more than two years, yet that alone does not confirm money moved into bitcoin 3.

ETF demand can affect supply/demand dynamics, but “short squeeze” mechanics are more directly tied to derivatives positioning

  • U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs can tighten supply and shift demand, which can feed into price moves.
  • Coinbase Institutional (Coinbase’s research and services unit for large investors) wrote in a prior cycle that cumulative net growth in BTC (bitcoin) held by ETFs ran nearly three times the pace of miner-created supply, in that context 4.
  • A “short squeeze” happens when traders betting on declines get forced to buy back as prices rise, and that usually tracks derivatives positioning plus liquidations rather than ETF flows. Funding rates also work the opposite of some claims, since positive funding means traders holding long positions pay traders holding short positions and can signal a long-leaning market 1.
  • Amberdata (a crypto market-data provider) put BTC funding at about +0.32% on average for the 7D (seven-day) period ending Jan. 19, which annualizes to 43.7% APR. The number supports a positive funding backdrop, though it does not settle whether ETF flows drove any squeeze 1.
