Bitcoin hits $71k as Iran war worries ease

Bitcoin rose to about US$71,000 as cryptocurrency and other risk assets rallied after US president Donald Trump said the war in Iran would come to an end “very soon.”

Ether regained the US$2,000 level and CoinDesk‘s CD5 and CD10 indexes, both bitcoin- and ether-heavy, rose about 4.3 percent.

The Dollar Index fell to about 98.5 while oil prices pulled back, moves that helped lift equities and precious metals.

Open interest in BTC and ETH futures rose more than 5 percent, signaling new capital inflows, while implied volatility for both assets dropped over 4 percent.

Several altcoins outperformed, with Solana token JUP and restaking token ETHFI posting gains, while memecoins were the weakest, rising just 2.6 percent.

CoinDesk wrote that bitcoin would need to trade back up toward US$98,000 and establish levels of support to break a downtrend that began in early October.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Crypto jumped as fears of an oil shock eased

  • Crypto rose after U.S. president Donald Trump said the war in Iran would end “very soon.” A softer U.S. dollar and falling oil prices also lifted higher-risk assets.
  • The conflict began on February 28 when U.S.-Israeli strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, which triggered Iranian attacks on Israel and U.S. bases 1.
  • Iran warned it could block the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of global oil. Reports estimated roughly 140 million barrels sat on tankers outside the strait 1.
  • Analysts said a long shutdown could lift recession odds, with one analysis calling it a potential “base-case outcome” in an extended-closure scenario 2.
  • Before the easing headlines, crypto derivatives leaned negative. Near-term futures traded below spot, plus funding rates ran negative to neutral 3.

A brief war may pass quickly, while a longer one could hit growth

  • Markets now lean toward a short conflict. ING analysts described a path where an early oil spike fades with little lasting macro impact 4.
  • If tensions keep supply at risk near the strait, one analysis estimated Brent could hold above $100–$110 a barrel 2.
  • ING warned this may create an “impossible central bank dilemma.” Rate cuts could look harder to defend even if growth weakens 4.
  • For tech and crypto investors, high energy costs plus slower monetary easing would tighten financial conditions. That can cool the risk-taking that often supports rallies 4.
