Bitcoin falls after US Senate blocks Clarity Act

Bitcoin and other crypto assets fell on September 15 after the US Senate blocked the Clarity Act, while markets also worried about higher interest rates.

Bitcoin fell as much as 5.3%, while Ether dropped more than 8%. Coinbase shares closed 10% lower. CoinGlass said nearly US$300 million in bullish crypto bets were liquidated in the final hour before the vote.

The bill would have given the Commodity Futures Trading Commission primary authority over much of the digital asset industry.

It needed 60 votes to advance, but failed 49-50 after Democrats said its ethics language did not require a sitting president to divest crypto holdings or business interests.

The failed vote means no immediate change to the US regulatory patchwork.

Most crypto platforms and token projects remain subject to Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement, while the Commodity Futures Trading Commission keeps a more limited role focused on derivatives.
