Bitcoin, Ether slide as traders eye US economic signals

Bitcoin and Ether prices fell on August 19, 2025 as traders took profits and awaited US economic updates.

Bitcoin dropped 2.8% to US$113,234, while Ether slid 5.4% to US$4,108, according to The Block.

Analysts linked the decline to profit-taking, liquidations, and caution ahead of policy signals.

Kronos Research CIO Vincent Liu said traders remain cautious ahead of possible policy signals and pointed to US$4,200 as a critical price level for ether.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw slower inflows and some outflows this month after strong demand in July 2025, while Ether ETFs also began to see outflows in August 2025.

Market participants are watching for the US Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes on August 20, 2025, and Chair Jerome Powell’s speech for rate cut signals on August 22, 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Bitcoin’s growing sensitivity to Fed policy reflects its evolution from digital currency to risk asset

The cryptocurrency market’s focus on Jerome Powell’s upcoming Jackson Hole speech demonstrates how Bitcoin has transformed from an independent digital currency to a macro-sensitive risk asset.

Historical data shows Bitcoin’s price reacts significantly to Federal Reserve announcements, including a 39% drop following the March 2020 rate cut announcement despite the generally positive long-term impact of lower rates on crypto prices2.

This sensitivity stems from Bitcoin’s increasing correlation with traditional financial markets, particularly during periods of market volatility when investors treat it similarly to growth stocks rather than as the inflation hedge it was originally conceived to be3.

The current market consolidation ahead of Fed communications shows how institutional participation has fundamentally changed Bitcoin’s price dynamics, making it more responsive to the same macroeconomic factors that drive traditional asset classes.

2️⃣ ETF outflows signal a maturing but still volatile institutional crypto market

The recent shift from record Bitcoin ETF inflows to net outflows this month illustrates how institutional crypto investment remains highly momentum-driven and sensitive to profit-taking cycles.

After Bitcoin ETFs experienced record-breaking July inflows, both Bitcoin and Ether ETFs have begun recording outflows as prices consolidated near recent highs1.
