Bitcoin drops to $69k as Middle East tensions rise

Bitcoin fell to about US$69,192 on March 22 morning, down 2.2% in 24 hours and 3.1% on the week, after US President Donald Trump said Iran had 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on its power plants.

Cryptocurrency traders faced heavy losses as prices dropped, with CoinGlass data showing about US$299 million liquidated across 84,239 traders, including US$254 million in long positions.

Bitcoin long liquidations were about US$122 million and ether longs about US$95.7 million, while the largest single liquidation was about US$10 million BTC-USDT swap on OKX.

Ether fell about 1.8% to US$2,114 and XRP slipped 2.5% to US$1.41, as the strait remained restricted to most commercial traffic, and traders weighed the risk of further escalation.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Bitcoin held up after the weekend drop

  • Bitcoin rose 7.3% since the late February strikes on Iran, making it the top performer among major assets 1.
  • Over that stretch, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq (two major US stock indexes) slipped 1% to 2%, and gold fell 3.7% 1.
  • Institutional buying helped, as US spot Bitcoin ETFs (exchange-traded funds) pulled in almost $1 billion in net inflows from March 2 to 4, ending four straight weeks of outflows 2.
  • Positioning also looked healthier. Leverage moved back near long-term averages. Large holders spent weeks distributing coins, which left fewer eager sellers when tensions rose 3.

An oil shock could delay US rate cuts and squeeze liquidity

  • The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of daily global oil supply, and it sits at the center of the economic risk 4.
  • A long disruption could lift crude to $120 to $130 a barrel and stir inflation again 4.
  • Traders now put a 99.1% chance on the Federal Reserve holding rates at the next meeting, after fresh worries about inflation 1.
  • Later rate cuts can shrink global liquidity. Higher borrowing costs can weigh on fast-growing areas like technology, plus speculative bets such as cryptocurrencies 4.
