Bitcoin drops 2.6% to $119k
Bitcoin fell on August 15, 2025, in Seoul after reaching a one-month high the previous day, following higher-than-expected US inflation data for July.
The cryptocurrency was trading at about 165.6 million won (US$119,100) on Bithumb, down 2.6% from August 14’s peak of 169.9 million won (US$122,193).
US producer price index data showed a 0.9% month-on-month jump, well above the 0.2% forecast, and marking the biggest gain since June 2022.
The unexpected data has complicated expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September, with analysts suggesting the central bank may keep rates steady.
In US trading, bitcoin dropped 4.5% from an all-time high of US$124,500 on August 14, 2025, to around US$118,800 by August 15, 2025.
Other major cryptocurrencies also declined, with ethereum down nearly 4% at US$4,620, and XRP and solana each falling more than 5%.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Bitcoin’s sensitivity to inflation data reveals its dual nature as both hedge and risk asset
The sharp 4.5% drop following unexpectedly high Producer Price Index data illustrates Bitcoin’s complex relationship with inflation expectations1.
While Bitcoin is often marketed as an inflation hedge due to its fixed 21 million coin supply, the immediate selloff shows it behaves more like a risk asset when inflation threatens Federal Reserve policy changes2.
This relationship stems from Bitcoin’s dependence on low interest rate environments. When inflation data suggests the Fed might delay rate cuts, investors often move away from Bitcoin toward yield-bearing traditional investments2.
The pattern has become more noticeable as institutional adoption increased Bitcoin’s correlation with traditional markets, challenging its original narrative as an uncorrelated asset2.
2️⃣ Crypto market-wide selloffs during inflation surprises demonstrate increased interconnectedness
The simultaneous decline across major cryptocurrencies—Ethereum dropping 4%, XRP and Solana each falling over 5%—shows how macroeconomic data now moves the entire crypto ecosystem together.
This broad-based reaction contrasts with Bitcoin’s early years when it traded more independently of economic indicators3.
