US biotech firm secures $200m for de-extinction efforts
Dallas-based biotechnology startup Colossal Biosciences has secured US$200 million in its latest funding round, increasing its valuation to US$10.2 billion.
Led by TWG Global, this funding brings the company’s total investments to US$435 million since it was founded.
The company’s primary focus is on de-extinction, which includes efforts to revive species such as the woolly mammoth, the dodo, and the Tasmanian tiger.
Co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm has said that the company plans to produce a woolly mammoth calf using a surrogate elephant by late 2028.
This will involve using Asian elephant cells and mammoth genes from ancient samples.
