Binance tightens rules on token market makers

Binance has issued new rules for token issuers and liquidity providers that require more disclosure about market-making arrangements and restrict certain deal terms.

The exchange said projects must disclose a market maker and key contract terms, and profit sharing or guaranteed returns will not be allowed.

Binance also said token lending agreements must spell out how borrowed tokens can be used, and it flagged practices such as selling that conflicts with token release schedules, one-sided trading, and trades that inflate volume.

It may blacklist market makers for misconduct, but it did not say whether it would publish the names of firms it bans.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Binance’s new rules aim to curb manipulation in market making

  • For years, ties between token projects and market makers often stayed private, which left traders with less information and opened room for tactics like wash trading (trading with yourself to make activity look higher than it is) 1.
  • Binance now bars profit-sharing deals and guaranteed returns, which the exchange says can push a market maker to stir up artificial volatility or trade for its own gain instead of adding real liquidity 2.
  • The rules require disclosure of a market maker’s identity, legal entity, and core contract terms, which adds visibility to a usually hidden part of crypto market structure 2.

The policy may drive more openness across exchanges

  • Binance is the largest crypto exchange by trading volume, so its requirements may shape how other venues handle market-maker disclosures 2.
  • Rival exchanges could feel pressure to adopt similar standards to reduce regulatory arbitrage, where token projects pick platforms with looser disclosure rules 1.
  • These disclosures can help investors check who supports a token’s trading and review the relationship’s basic terms as part of due diligence 2.
