Binance sees Bitcoin decoupling from Fed after ETFs
Bitcoin may be moving out of step with US Federal Reserve policy as the rise of spot ETFs brings more institutional investors into the market, according to a report by Binance Research.
The report said bitcoin’s correlation with Binance’s Global Easing Breadth Index, which tracks 41 central banks, turned strongly negative from 2024 after being mildly positive before ETFs.
Binance said retail traders had previously driven sharper reactions to macro signals, while institutions using ETFs tend to position earlier and focus more on crypto-native drivers such as policy progress and institutional fund flows.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A split institutional market for Bitcoin is emerging
- “Institutional investors” bundles two groups that behave differently, fast-trading hedge funds and long-term asset managers (firms that manage money for pensions, endowments, and other clients) 1.
- Hedge funds moved early into U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, then pulled back as arbitrage trades faded. Brevan Howard cut its stake in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) by 85% 1.
- Investment advisors (professionals who manage client portfolios) kept buying through selloffs, lifting their combined IBIT holdings by 145% over the past year 1.
- Sovereign wealth funds (state-owned investment funds) also sit in the longer-term camp. CF Benchmarks (a crypto index and benchmarking firm) says the Emirate of Abu Dhabi raised its IBIT position by 46% in Q4 2025 1.
Bitcoin and ETF flows may track expectations, not just Fed headlines
- Binance Research says that since U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs won approval in January 2024, institutions using ETFs often build positions months before policy shifts. That can push bitcoin to “front-run” (lead) monetary policy signals 2.
- Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in US$458.2 million in net inflows in one day during a stretch described as “extreme fear” among retail investors. The move fits institutional dip-buying during geopolitical stress 3.
- That lens treats bitcoin less like a macro “lagging receiver” and more like a “leading pricer.” Crypto-native forces, including policy progress and institutional fund flows, may outweigh the path of monetary easing 2.
