Binance said to seek removal of US oversight

Binance executives recently held discussions with officials from the US Treasury Department.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the talks included a request to remove a US monitor overseeing Binance’s compliance with anti-money-laundering regulations.

The report also mentioned that Binance is negotiating to list a dollar-pegged cryptocurrency issued by World Liberty Financial, which is linked to US President Donald Trump.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Binance’s regulatory strategy reflects a pattern of adaptation

Binance asking to remove the US monitor follows its established approach to regulatory navigation that has defined its business from the beginning.

Since founding in 2017, the exchange has strategically relocated multiple times to optimize its regulatory environment, moving from China to Japan and then to Malta, as part of its growth strategy 1.

This regulatory arbitrage approach helped fuel Binance’s explosive rise to become the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, capturing 36.6% of spot trading volume by 2019 1.

The current attempt to ease compliance requirements continues this pattern, though in a more direct manner by engaging with US authorities rather than relocating to more friendly jurisdictions.

The exchange’s regulatory maneuvers have consistently prioritized operational flexibility, with CEO Changpeng Zhao explicitly focusing on jurisdictions welcoming crypto businesses 2.

2️⃣ Crypto industry’s growing political influence spans both parties

Binance’s reported discussions with U.S. officials reflect the industry’s broader strategy of cultivating political relationships across party lines.

The cryptocurrency sector spent an unprecedented $131 million in the 2024 election cycle specifically to elect pro-crypto lawmakers, becoming the second-largest corporate political contributor after fossil fuel companies 34.

This investment yielded results, with 274 pro-crypto candidates elected to the House and 20 to the Senate, creating a more favorable legislative environment for companies like Binance 4.

The industry’s political strategy has evolved from primarily regulatory avoidance to active engagement with political figures who can influence the regulatory framework.
