Binance is preparing to stop serving users in the European Union and may notify customers as soon as June 16 after failing to secure a license from Greece’s Hellenic Capital Market Commission ahead of Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) deadlines, chief legal officer Eleanor Hughes said.

Binance applied for the Greek license last year.

Hughes said the crypto exchange had received no formal indication that its application had been denied, but it was preparing for a possible exit to limit disruption for EU users.

Under MiCA, a crypto-asset service provider authorized in one member state can passport across the bloc for covered services.

Existing providers can use national transition periods that may run until July 1, 2026, but firms that are denied or fail to obtain authorization by the applicable deadline must stop regulated services.

Binance also operates in France under a pre-MiCA anti-money laundering registration that does not convert automatically into a MiCA license.
