Binance faces $4.7b in outflows after crypto theft

Binance customers withdrew a net US$4.72 billion after withdrawals resumed on November 1, following a theft of about US$6.3 billion in crypto.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation attributed the attack to North Korea’s state-sponsored TraderTraitor group on October 31.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, froze withdrawals for more than two days. It said net outflows were about 3% of assets on the platform and pledged to repay customers in full.

Its public reserves portal shows ratios for major tokens.

Circle, a US stablecoin company, said it froze more than US$1.1 billion in USDC. Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic estimated the hackers still controlled about US$3.28 billion. Circle’s USDC terms allow it to freeze or blacklist funds tied to illicit activity.

Separately, the US Treasury sanctioned North Korean state-sponsored cyber actors.
