Billionaire Ambani taps Google, Meta for India’s AI infrastructure
Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of Reliance Intelligence, a subsidiary focused on AI infrastructure, at the company’s annual general meeting.
Reliance Industries is a major Indian conglomerate with interests in energy, telecom, and digital services.
The new unit will initially partner with Google Cloud to develop an AI cloud infrastructure starting with a data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Reliance has also formed a joint venture with Meta to develop enterprise AI solutions for businesses in India and selected global markets, with a combined investment of about US$100 million and a 70/30 ownership split.
The Meta deal includes access to a Llama-based enterprise AI platform, offering tools for sectors such as sales, ad, and customer service.
Ambani added that Reliance plans to expand Jio Platforms internationally and may pursue a public listing in H1 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Reliance’s strategic reinvention follows a decades-long pattern of entering sectors at pivotal moments
Ambani’s AI infrastructure push represents the latest chapter in Reliance’s systematic evolution across India’s most transformative industries over six decades.
The company began as a textile manufacturer in 1960, expanded into petrochemicals during the 1980s liberalization, and launched Jio in 2016 to revolutionize India’s telecom sector 1.
Each transition coincided with major economic shifts, such as textiles during India’s early industrialization, petrochemicals during economic liberalization, and digital services during the smartphone boom.
The choice of Jamnagar for the new AI data center reflects this strategic approach, as it’s the same location where Reliance built the world’s largest refinery in 2000 with 1.24 million barrels per day capacity 2.
This suggests Reliance’s AI venture isn’t just following market trends but positioning for India’s next major economic transformation, leveraging existing infrastructure advantages.
2️⃣ India’s AI talent shortage creates both challenge and opportunity for Reliance’s ambitious timeline
While India’s AI market is projected to reach $7.84 billion in 2025 and potentially add $450-500 billion to GDP by 2025, a critical skills gap threatens execution 3.
