A team of former Breakthrough Energy staff is launching the Clean Economy Project, a nonprofit focused on advancing clean energy policy in the US.

The group, which calls itself CleanEcon, includes alumni from Bill Gates’ climate-focused organization and is led by president Aliya Haq.

CleanEcon plans to lobby, run issue campaigns, build coalitions, and connect policymakers to startups to make clean energy more accessible.

Its board includes Rich Powell, CEO of the Clean Energy Buyers Association, and Mike Boots, former executive VP at Breakthrough Energy.

The organization has a multimillion-dollar budget backed by about 10 funders from philanthropy and venture capital, though names have not been disclosed.

CleanEcon’s initial focus is on the power sector, but its work will also cover transport, industrial decarbonization, and advanced manufacturing.
