🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic talent acquisition reflects India’s booming digital lending landscape

Trillionloans’ appointment of Sandeep Singh comes at a pivotal time in India’s digital lending evolution, which is projected to reach a staggering $1 trillion market by 2023 1.

The hiring of an industry veteran with 15+ years at established players like Aditya Birla Finance mirrors a broader industry trend where experienced leadership is becoming critical as the sector matures.

This executive movement reflects the increasing competition for talent in India’s fintech space, which now hosts 27 unicorns as of March 2025, making it the third-largest fintech unicorn ecosystem globally after the US and China 2.

Singh’s deep expertise in digital lending operations will be particularly valuable as the sector faces increasing regulatory scrutiny, with the Reserve Bank of India actively issuing circulars to enhance customer protection 3.

2️⃣ BharatPe’s NBFC strategy aligns with wider fintech diversification trends

BharatPe’s increased stake in Trillionloans follows a pattern seen across India’s fintech landscape, where companies are establishing or acquiring NBFCs to control more of the lending value chain.

The trend of fintechs acquiring or launching NBFC arms (as seen with TapFin, Vayana, and Jio Financial Services) demonstrates a shift toward vertical integration in the financial services ecosystem, allowing companies to expand beyond their core offerings.

Despite the significant growth in digital lending platforms, which are expected to exceed US$17 billion by 2025, the competition has intensified, driving fintech companies to seek differentiation through integrated lending capabilities 4.
