Bessemer joins $74m funding round for US chip design AI firm
ChipAgents, a California-based company specializing in AI platforms for semiconductor design, announced that it has raised US$74 million in total funding, including a US$50 million oversubscribed Series A1 round led by Matter Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Micron, MediaTek, and Ericsson.
The funding will support the company’s move to a new headquarters in Santa Clara and its growth from 10 to 46 employees.
The company plans to expand its AI infrastructure, engineering team, and global deployment of multi-agent chip design systems.
ChipAgents develops AI tools that can plan, reason, and execute complex silicon programs, aiming to transform chip development processes.
It has secured several multi-year licensing agreements with 80 semiconductor firms and reported 140x year-over-year ARR growth.
The company’s AI platform aims to enhance design productivity amid rising chip complexity and talent shortages.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
ChipAgents’ funding draws on company-reported results and named backers
- The company says its system reached a 97.4% pass rate on NVIDIA’s VerilogEval, a benchmark for measuring an AI’s ability to write correct hardware description code 1.
- In production, ChipAgents says the software cuts formal assertion generation time by 240x and speeds Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) environment generation by 400x 2.
- The firm lists strategic investors that include Micron, MediaTek, and Ericsson 2.
- Matter Venture Partners led the latest round. The firm is described as a TSMC-backed HardTech venture group focused on hardware and deep-tech startups. ChipAgents says total capital raised reached $74 million 2.
A push against EDA incumbents and what it could mean for chip design talent
- ChipAgents is taking aim at Electronic Design Automation (EDA) vendors, software providers used to design and verify chips, including Synopsys, Cadence, and Siemens EDA. It has built an advisory board with Wally Rhines (former CEO of Mentor Graphics, now Siemens EDA), Raúl Camposano (former CTO of Synopsys), Jack Harding (former CEO of Cadence), and Erez Tsur (former CEO of Cadence Israel) 2.
- Investors describe the tools as a way to stretch engineering capacity amid a projected 35% shortfall in semiconductor design talent by 2030 3.
- Verification can take over 80% of a chip design cycle. ChipAgents is selling automation that moves semiconductor design engineers away from manual verification toward higher-value work 4.
- Deployments run as “human-in-the-loop” today. The founder said fully autonomous AI agents remain a longer-term target, with an estimate of three to five years 5.
