Bertelsmann leads $30m round for Indian rural commerce firm
Rozana, a rural commerce startup operating across about 21,000 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, has raised $30 million in a funding round led by existing investors Bertelsmann India Investments and Fireside Ventures, co-founder and CEO Ankur Dahiya said.
The round included new investors such as the family office of snack maker Bikaji’s promoters and US-based venture capital firm Spark Growth Ventures.
It included about US$5 million in debt, Dahiya said.
Dahiya said the financing more than doubled Rozana’s valuation to nearly US$200 million from about US$80–85 million in 2024.
He said the funds will be used to strengthen technology infrastructure, add product categories, develop private label offerings, and deepen brand partnerships.
Rozana currently has more than 75 retail stores, which it plans to expand to over 200, while entering two to three more states across the Gangetic belt.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Rozana’s growth is powered by a hyperlocal ‘peer partner’ network
- Rozana’s next phase of growth, boosted by this funding, runs through more than 18,000 local micro-entrepreneurs called “peer partners” 1.
- Many of these partners are women who sign up new shoppers, share offers on WhatsApp, and manage last-mile delivery inside their villages 2.
- With low overhead, Rozana skips traditional intermediaries and buys directly from brands, while peer partners earn a 4-8% commission per delivery 2.
- The model focuses on earning confidence from first-time online buyers, a hurdle that has long limited rural distribution and demand generation for large e-commerce firms in remote villages 2.
This funding supports Rozana’s pitch as a distribution channel for brands into rural India
- Rozana markets itself as a route for brands to reach rural consumers in India, which it calls an opportunity of nearly 1 billion people 1.
- The company applies AI plus purchasing-behavior data to tune its supply chain and align inventory with local demand 3.
- The new capital will help Rozana extend warehousing and logistics into additional districts, build closer brand ties, and improve its technology platform 1.
- Rivalry may rise as legacy players and e-commerce giants weigh partnerships with hyperlocal platforms like Rozana or roll out similar community-led plans to improve reach and trust in rural markets 2.
