Belgian biotech startup AmphiStar secures $14.7m

AmphiStar, a biosurfactant developer located in Ghent, has secured €12.5 million (US$14.7 million) in funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC).

This funding consists of a €2.5 million (US$2.95 million) grant and a €10 million (US$11.78 million) equity investment.

It aims to enhance the production and commercialization of microbial biosurfactants made from bio-based waste.

AmphiStar develops sustainable biosurfactants as alternatives to synthetic surfactants commonly used in personal care and home care products.

Founded in 2021, AmphiStar employs synthetic biology and microbial fermentation to convert bio-based waste into biosurfactants.

These methods reduce dependence on virgin crops like palm oil, which are linked to environmental concerns such as deforestation and habitat loss.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Biosurfactants market reaches inflection point amid sustainability shifts

The timing of AmphiStar’s funding coincides with a significant acceleration in the biosurfactants market, which is projected to grow from approximately $2.6 billion in 2024 to over $4 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 7.7% 1.

This growth is being driven by increasing consumer awareness, with studies showing 75% of consumers now consider environmental impact in their purchasing decisions 2.

Major personal care brands are already committing to eliminate fossil-derived carbon in their products by 2030, creating immediate market opportunities for companies like AmphiStar 3.

The four-to-ninefold reduction in global warming potential that AmphiStar reports for its products addresses a critical need, as the traditional surfactant industry (valued at approximately $40 billion) faces mounting sustainability challenges across extraction, manufacturing, and disposal stages 4.

Europe, where AmphiStar is based, currently dominates the global biosurfactants market with a 48.53% share, providing the company with a strategic advantage in the world’s most receptive market 5.

2️⃣ Upcycling waste streams addresses key production cost barriers

AmphiStar’s approach of upcycling bio-based waste directly tackles one of the industry’s most persistent challenges: the high production costs of biosurfactants compared to synthetic alternatives 6, 7.
