Battery Ventures raises $3.3b fund for AI, tech bets

Battery Ventures has raised US$3.3 billion for its latest fund, Battery Ventures XV, to invest in software, infrastructure, industrial technology, and life sciences.

The firm plans to allocate the capital to both early-stage and growth-stage companies, including sectors such as AI, developer tools, and cybersecurity. The firm said it generated over US$10 billion in returns over the past five years.

Battery’s recent fundraising was completed in four months, with about 80% of backers being existing investors. Battery said strong investor support helped close the fund quickly.

The firm is cautious about backing large foundation model developers. Since 1983, Battery has backed more than 530 companies globally.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Battery’s success relies on a playbook that goes beyond capital

  • The firm backs its ’founder-friendly’ reputation with a portfolio-services team that helps with hiring, sales, marketing, business development, plus day-to-day operations 1.
  • Support spans the full company journey, since the firm invests worldwide from seed and venture through growth and buyout 1.
  • Since founding in 1983, the approach has led to a broad record that includes more than 70 public listings and more than 200 M&A (mergers and acquisitions) events, excluding seed-stage deals 2.

A tough fundraising market pushes more money toward established firms

  • Battery raised US$3.3 billion in four months, and about 80% came from existing backers, which signals a broader shakeout in the market.
  • Some firms still struggle to raise funds, while institutional investors such as pension funds and university endowments put more money with established managers that have long records, including Battery’s 40-year history 2.
  • Funding may keep piling into large, multi-stage firms, which leaves emerging or smaller venture capital funds with a steeper climb to raise money and win top deals.
