US bans smart cars with Chinese, Russian tech imports

The Biden administration has finalized a rule that bans the import and sale of personal smart cars using Chinese or Russian technology in the US.

Announced by the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security on Wednesday, the rule addresses national security concerns.

It targets connected car technology linked to China and Russia, which may compromise consumer privacy or allow foreign adversaries to control vehicles remotely.

This rule affects passenger vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or less, will restrict imports and sales of cars with foreign components.

Manufacturers from China or Russia are also prohibited from selling US-made vehicles in the US.

The restrictions will impact models as early as 2027, with additional measures for vehicles up to 2030.
