🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Bain separated BDC from its China business before this sale
- The possible stake sale comes after a years-long reshaping of Bain Capital’s Asian data center portfolio 1.
- Bain folded Bridge Data Centres (BDC) into Chindata, a China-focused data center operator, took Chindata public in 2020, then bought it back in a US$3.16 billion deal in 2023 1.
- After that buyout, Bain split the two operations again under WinTriX, its regional data center holding company 1.
- In January, Bain Capital sold Chindata to a consortium led by Shenzhen Dongyangguang Industry Co in a deal that valued the company at US$4 billion. That left BDC as a separate platform serving Southeast and South Asia 1.
The US$5 billion valuation tracks rising demand for AI data centers
- The price gives weight to BDC’s role as a builder of huge data centers and AI infrastructure for large cloud and technology customers 2.
- AI infrastructure spending worldwide is forecast to reach US$422.6 billion by 2029. BDC says its resource and power reservation pipeline now exceeds 2 gigawatts (GW) 3.
- Very large data center sites are expected to account for more than half of global capacity by 2027, up from 20% in 2017 3.
- Investors now treat AI-ready data centers as their own fast-growing asset class. In Asia-Pacific, the share of global data center mergers and acquisitions (M&A) rose from 11% in 2025 to 45% so far this year 1.
