Baidu’s Apollo teams up with local rental firm for self-driving
Baidu’s Apollo unit has partnered with Chinese auto rental firm Car Inc. to launch an autonomous driving rental service.
The agreement was signed in Beijing on May 8. The service will allow users to reserve self-driving vehicles.
This service is aimed at the elderly, unlicensed drivers, international visitors, and people with disabilities.
It is set to launch in the second quarter of this year, with plans to refine the service based on user feedback.
Both companies aim to expand the service to more cities across China.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s strategic ecosystem approach accelerates autonomous vehicle adoption
Baidu’s autonomous rental service with CAR Inc. builds on nearly a decade of strategic groundwork in self-driving technology.
Since 2013, Baidu has methodically assembled the infrastructure for large-scale autonomous vehicle deployment, creating an open-source platform (Apollo) that mimics Android’s strategy in smartphones1.
This collaborative approach has rapidly attracted over 100 partners in just 14 months, including major automakers and suppliers, positioning Baidu at the center of China’s autonomous ecosystem2.
The company has already secured China’s first commercial license for self-driving buses in Wuhan in 2019 and has logged over 2 million kilometers across 13 Chinese cities with its 300-vehicle fleet34.
This strategy is backed by substantial financial commitment, with Baidu launching a $1.5 billion investment fund specifically for autonomous driving technologies in 20175.
The rental service partnership represents the next logical phase in commercializing technology that has been systematically developed through successive testing environments, ranging from restricted areas to highways to complex urban settings.
2️⃣ Autonomous rentals could dramatically improve mobility for underserved populations
The Baidu-CAR Inc. partnership specifically highlights serving users “unable or prefer not to drive,” addressing a critical transportation gap that affects millions.
