Baidu’s Apollo Go expands self-driving tests in Hong Kong

Baidu’s Apollo Go has expanded its autonomous ride-hailing testing in Hong Kong, now operating ten vehicles on roads in the North Lantau area, including Cheong Hing Road and Airport Expo Boulevard.

The service has completed over 14,000 kilometers of safe driving in the city and received an updated pilot license, allowing trials on more routes.

It is now conducting trials with designated passengers after previously testing without riders between Hong Kong International Airport Car Park 4 and Chek Lap Kok South Road.

This marks Apollo Go’s entry into a right-hand drive, left-hand traffic market, different from its mainland China operations.

The company is working closely with Hong Kong authorities to ensure safety.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China leads global autonomous vehicle deployment with regulatory advantages

China’s self-driving taxi market has reached approximately $12 billion in 2024, significantly outpacing the U.S. market valued at $8 billion 1.

This dominance is reflected in Apollo Go’s operations, which provided about 826,000 rides in Q1 2024 alone—a 25% increase year-over-year—and has surpassed 6 million cumulative rides 2.

China’s centralized regulatory approach has enabled autonomous vehicles to operate in more than 15 cities, compared to just four major U.S. cities with fully driverless services 1.

The rapid expansion into Hong Kong demonstrates how this regulatory environment continues to facilitate growth, with the Transport Department actively supporting “safe and orderly” AV development rather than imposing restrictive barriers.

Apollo Go’s achievement of 170 million kilometers of safe autonomous driving illustrates the scale advantage Chinese companies have established in real-world testing and deployment.

2️⃣ Hong Kong represents a strategic technical milestone for global expansion

Apollo Go’s expansion into Hong Kong marks its first entry into a right-hand drive, left-hand traffic market, presenting significant technical and operational challenges different from mainland China.

This adaptation to different traffic systems demonstrates the flexibility of Baidu’s autonomous driving technology, potentially opening pathways to markets like the UK, Japan, Australia, and Singapore that share similar driving conventions.
