Baidu reports 250,000 weekly robotaxi rides, rivals Waymo
Baidu said its Apollo Go robotaxi service logged over 250,000 fully driverless weekly rides as of October 31.
This figure matches the weekly paid rides reported by Alphabet’s Waymo in the US earlier this year.
The service operates mainly in Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, and is expanding to Hong Kong, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Switzerland.
Apollo Go has handled 17 million ride orders to date, covering 240 million kilometers and logging 140 million fully driverless rides.
Baidu reported an average of one airbag deployment per 10.1 million kilometers, with no major accidents leading to injury or death.
The company will release its next quarterly results on November 18.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Ride totals do not equal revenue or viability
- Baidu cites 250,000 weekly driverless rides on Apollo Go robotaxi (self-driving taxi), but skips basics investors need, while Alphabet’s Waymo reports paid rides 1.
- Wuhan rides in 2024 leaned on subsidies, as one 28 km trip cost 26.52 yuan after a 109.52 yuan discount, an 81% subsidy rate 2.
- A 45 minute ride from Beijing’s Daxing airport was waived at 193.84 yuan, which signals a growth push over profits 3.
- Baidu says Apollo Go can turn profitable in 2025, while Haitong International Securities (a Hong Kong based brokerage and investment bank) pegs Wuhan losses at $11,000 per car per year 2.
- No data on paid ride mix, average fare, or subsidy across markets leaves investors guessing on unit economics and if growth leans on cash burn 1.
International growth runs on local rules and operations
- City pilots guide timing in Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Hong Kong/Switzerland 4. Dubai’s RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) targets 25% self driving travel by 2030 while Pony.ai (an autonomous driving startup) won Dubai permits with WeRide (a China based autonomous vehicle developer) planning driverless rides in the Uber app, both targeting 2026 4.
- Insurers can prep by studying Baidu claims data, as Apollo Go filed claims at one fourteenth the rate of human drivers, which implies risk profiles and pricing models 2.
- Mapping and localization (vehicle positioning) providers should track cities opening test roads, as China opened 32,000 km with 16,000 test licenses, which signals demand for high definition maps 5.
