Baidu ramps up hiring to meet AI demand

Chinese tech giant Baidu has initiated its largest recruitment drive to date, targeting AI talent.

This effort, part of its AIDU annual recruitment program, has resulted in a 60% increase in job openings this year, according to a company statement.

The Beijing-based firm is looking for candidates across 23 core business areas and 11 research fields, including large language model algorithms, machine learning, and speech technologies.

Baidu did not disclose the total number of available positions.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s AI talent shortage reflects global competition with more severe local dynamics

China’s struggle to find AI talent is part of a worldwide challenge but faces more acute pressures.

While global tech giants compete for AI professionals, China’s situation is particularly severe with a Talent Shortage Index of 3.24 (anything above 1 indicates shortage), and search algorithm engineers facing a critical 9.35 index score according to Liepin’s data.

This gap is projected to reach 5 million AI specialists as the industry expands, with current university programs only expected to meet one-third of the demand by 20301.

The talent crunch explains why Chinese tech giants are offering unprecedented compensation, with specialized AI roles commanding up to 5 million yuan ($686,000) annually2.

Despite China’s rapid expansion of AI programs from just 35 universities in 2018 to 621 institutions by 2024, the education system still cannot produce enough graduates with the necessary expertise to meet industry demand.

This talent shortage becomes particularly significant when viewed against China’s ambitious national AI strategy to build a $150 billion AI industry by 2030, creating a critical tension between policy goals and human resource limitations3.

2️⃣ The evolution of China’s AI recruitment strategies shows increasing sophistication

Baidu’s current recruitment drive represents a significant evolution from its earlier AI talent strategies, highlighting how Chinese tech companies have matured their approaches.

In 2014, Baidu established an AI research facility in Silicon Valley primarily to tap into international talent pools and collaborate with U.S. innovation ecosystems4.
