Baidu, Lyft to launch robotaxis in Europe by 2026

Baidu will launch its driverless taxis in Europe from 2026 through a partnership with Lyft, the companies announced.

The initial rollout will begin in the UK and Germany, with plans to expand to more European cities in the following years.

The deployment is subject to regulatory approval in each market.

Lyft recently strengthened its European presence by acquiring German ride-hailing company FreeNow, which operates in over 150 cities across nine countries.

It is not yet clear whether Baidu’s autonomous vehicles will be available through the FreeNow app or another Lyft platform.

Baidu has operated its Apollo Go robotaxi service in major cities in China since 2021.

This move follows Baidu’s agreement last month to deploy its autonomous cars on Uber’s platform outside the US and mainland China, focusing on Asia and the Middle East.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ European regulatory fragmentation creates complex deployment challenges

Baidu’s European expansion faces a patchwork of different national regulations that could complicate their “thousands of vehicles” goal across multiple countries.

While the UK has established the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 to promote AV testing, Germany has specific laws for Level 4 autonomous vehicles with detailed registration requirements 1. Each European market requires separate regulatory approval, explaining why Baidu and Lyft are starting with just two countries in 2026.

This regulatory complexity contrasts sharply with Baidu’s home market experience, where China’s unified “Made in China 2035” initiative aims for Level 4 AVs by 2025 with consistent national standards 1.

The fragmented approach means companies must navigate different liability frameworks, safety standards, and operational requirements in each European country, creating a significant scaling challenge.

2️⃣ Cost advantage strategy drives international expansion over domestic competition

Baidu’s partnerships with Lyft and Uber reflect a strategic pivot toward international markets where their cost advantages can be most effective.
