Baidu launches AI-powered Wikipedia rival for global users
Baidu has launched BaiduWiki, an online encyclopedia available in English, Spanish, French, Russian, and Japanese, which went live earlier this week, according to online records.
The platform contains around 1 million entries, translated with the assistance of AI tools, and is positioned as a global version of Baidu’s existing Baike service, which has over 30 million entries.
Alongside this, Baidu introduced a new “global search” feature for its Ernie Assistant, providing users with access to international destinations and information.
The company plans to incorporate its global search capabilities into other services, including AI and cloud offerings, to support its international growth strategy.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The new global encyclopedia is built on a controlled domestic foundation
- BaiduWiki serves as an international edition of Baidu Baike, Baidu’s long-running Chinese-language online encyclopedia. Baidu Baike follows Chinese government censorship rules, which can leave politically sensitive entries missing, shortened, or locked 1.
- One study found the Baidu Baike entry on artist Ai Weiwei was much shorter than the Chinese Wikipedia version 1.
- Baidu Baike has drawn criticism for hosting pseudoscience, running commercial promotions, and copying material from Wikipedia without proper attribution 2.
- Baidu is ending support for the standalone Baike app while keeping Baike access through a mini-program inside the main Baidu app. The company tied the shift to AI development and described it as a move toward “better user experiences” 3.
The expansion fits a wider global product rollout, while AI data claims lack support in the cited material
- Baidu’s global search and BaiduWiki launches sit within a plan to release more AI products overseas, including digital humans (AI-generated avatars that can speak and present content) and no-code app builders (tools that let non-programmers create software with minimal coding) 4.
- Baidu claims it indexes “hundreds of billions of pieces of high-quality global content” to expand global search, which links with Ernie Assistant 5.
- Ernie Assistant has passed 200 million monthly active users, according to The Wall Street Journal and matching reports elsewhere 6.
