Baidu launches AI ‘smart box’ to improve search, tasks
Baidu has announced major updates to its search platform, representing the most significant changes in a decade.
The enhancements include a revamped mobile app search bar, now referred to as a “smart box,” which can perform complex tasks beyond simple text queries.
The new search box supports long text inputs and offers features such as AI-generated text and images, trip planning, object recognition, and report writing.
These capabilities use Baidu’s multimodal Ernie AI models and over 18,000 integrated third-party AI agents.
The company states that these agents can autonomously complete tasks by dividing them into subtasks.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Baidu’s pivot reflects necessary business model evolution after years of challenges
Baidu’s transformation of its search functionality represents its most significant attempt to diversify beyond traditional search advertising, which historically accounted for 97% of its revenue as recently as 2015 1.
This strategic shift follows years of challenges, including the 2016 Wei Zexi scandal that damaged public trust when a student died after receiving questionable medical treatment found through Baidu’s paid search results 2.
The incident triggered regulatory scrutiny and cost Baidu approximately RMB 2 billion per quarter in revenue, highlighting the vulnerability of its advertising-dependent business model 1.
Despite dominating China’s search market with an 80% share in 2016, Baidu has struggled to keep pace with the diversification strategies of competitors like Alibaba and Tencent, making this AI-powered upgrade particularly crucial for its future competitiveness 2.
The new “smart box” approach that emphasizes task completion rather than mere information retrieval represents Baidu’s most aggressive attempt to transform its core product since establishing its AI lab in 2013 1.
2️⃣ Search engines globally are racing to evolve beyond information retrieval
Baidu’s transformation mirrors a global industry shift, with Google similarly introducing AI features that move beyond traditional keyword-based search toward more interactive, task-oriented experiences 3.
This shift is driven by compelling usage data – traffic to the world’s top 10 chatbots increased 191.67% between April 2023 and March 2025, while traffic to traditional search engines grew just 2.38% in the same period 4.
