US backs $900m funding to deploy nuclear technologies

The United States has launched the application process for up to US$900 million in funding to support the domestic deployment of small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology.

This is a part of the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law aimed at strengthening US nuclear capabilities.

The Biden administration considers nuclear power vital for reducing carbon emissions, as small modular reactors are favored for their simpler designs and potential cost savings.

Proponents suggest that SMRs, which can be built in factories, offer flexible power generation options and uses such as desalination.
