AWS unveils AI platform for healthcare

AWS launched Amazon Connect Health, the first purpose-built AWS AI solution for healthcare providers that automates tasks like patient verification, scheduling, documentation, and coding, and integrates with EHRs, the company said.

The service runs 24/7, understands natural language, escalates complex cases to human staff, and lets health systems customise handoffs, AWS said.

AWS said some healthcare staff spend up to 80% of call time on manual data work, and 89% of patients report care navigation problems when switching providers.

AWS cited UC San Diego Health as saving about one minute per call, diverting 630 weekly hours from verification to direct patient assistance, and cutting call abandonment by 30% to 60%; One Medical has used ambient documentation in over one million visits, according to AWS.

AWS said it offers more than 130 HIPAA-eligible services overall, and Amazon Connect Health uses evidence-mapping to link AI outputs to source material for clinician review.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon Connect Health runs on Amazon Connect at global scale

  • Amazon Connect Health uses Amazon Connect, a customer-service contact center platform used by large global companies.
  • NatWest Group runs 9 contact centers with more than 9,000 agents and handles over 25 million customer calls each year, while Fujitsu Costa Rica manages over 5,000 agents serving customers of more than 450+ companies 1.
  • Amazon Connect Health ties into Electronic Health Records (EHRs), the digital systems clinicians use to store and manage patient medical information, so staff can pull relevant patient context during calls.
  • Appointment management sits in preview and medical coding remains in gated preview, so the product rollout will land in stages 2.

AWS aims to build a broader healthcare contact center platform

  • AWS positions the launch as a base layer for healthcare providers’ contact center work and patient-access flows.
  • A unified Software Development Kit (SDK) for Electronic Health Records (EHRs) vendors and developers pushes more apps to run on AWS infrastructure, with its AI and data services 2.
  • AWS links the approach to staff support through UC San Diego Health results that shifted 630 hours per week from patient verification to direct assistance 2.
  • Specialized healthcare software vendors face tougher competition from a tightly connected offering backed by one of the world’s largest cloud providers and its security program plus AI spend 3.
