AWS to expand India data centers with $7b Telangana project

Amazon Web Services will invest US$7 billion to expand its cloud data center infrastructure in Telangana, India, over the next 14 years.

The agreement was signed during the Telangana Rising Global Summit on December 8 and 9.

The Telangana government will provide support, including facilitation measures and infrastructure assistance, to help AWS grow its data center presence in the state.

AWS said the Hyderabad region will support cloud services for startups, enterprises, government, and AI initiatives across India.

This move is part of AWS’s ongoing efforts to scale its operations in the country.

AWS’s Rs 60,000 crore (Indian rupees; 1 crore equals 10 million) commitment leaves capacity details unaddressed

  • The announcement gives an investment figure and skips capacity details such as availability zones (independent clusters of data centers within a region designed for fault isolation). It also omits megawatts (MW) of data center power; it does not share number of sites or construction phases 1.
  • AWS entered India with the Mumbai region in 2016 and invested $3.7 billion in Mumbai during 2016–2022; Hyderabad went live in 2022 2. AWS has three operational sites (data center campuses) in Telangana with about US $1 billion invested 1.

Renewable energy developers can prepare for AWS’s power procurement needs

  • Industry energy-policy panelists say Telangana’s forthcoming clean energy policy could mandate 35–40% renewable procurement 3. The state allows unlimited captive power generation (electricity produced for a company’s own use via a dedicated plant) for new industrial units 4, which aligns with AWS’s sustainability commitments.
  • Telangana added 16 MW in two years while Andhra Pradesh added 500–600 MW 3. Energy developers and energy-storage providers who understand Telangana’s open access rules can move first; they also need to navigate approval delays for captive or group captive projects (where multiple consumers co-own a plant to qualify as captive). That can open supply deals with AWS facilities.
  • Infrastructure investors can track plans for 3,000 MW of solar and 2,000 MW of pumped storage (hydroelectric facilities that store energy by moving water between reservoirs) 4. That sets up grid-scale opportunities tied to data center demand beyond AWS’s direct procurement.
