AWS signs $410m compute deal with AI startup Recursive

Recursive Superintelligence, a London-based AI startup, said on July 28 it signed a multiyear US$410 million compute deal with Amazon Web Services to support research into self-improving AI systems, as it put more of its budget into infrastructure than hiring.

CEO Richard Socher, who co-founded Recursive with University College London professor and former Google DeepMind scientist Tim Rocktäschel, said the company expects more compute agreements as it scales and plans to release its first products around October.

Recursive came out of stealth in May with US$650 million in funding at a US$4.65 billion valuation, backed by GV, Greycroft, AMD Ventures, and Nvidia, and said it is building AI that can autonomously design, test, and improve its own architecture.

In AI research, recursive self-improvement refers to systems improving their own code and capabilities, while Anthropic said the field is moving toward more automated AI development but not yet fully autonomous successors.

AWS said it is not taking equity in Recursive. The companies also said they will co-develop infrastructure for the startup’s needs.
