AWS says objects struck UAE data center, causing fire

Amazon’s cloud unit AWS said power to its data center in the United Arab Emirates was temporarily shut after objects struck the facility, creating sparks and fire.

When Reuters asked whether the incident was linked to recent Iranian missile and drone strikes in the region, AWS did not confirm or deny.

Reuters said Iran’s retaliatory strikes hit airports, ports, and residential areas across the country and the wider Gulf.

At around 4:30 AM PST, AWS said one of its Availability Zones (mec1-az2) was impacted, and the fire department cut power while crews worked to extinguish the fire.

The company said restoring connectivity in the affected zone would take several hours and that other zones in the UAE were operating normally.
