AWS Q2 revenue rises 18% to $30.8b

Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported US$30.87 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2024, representing 18% year-on-year growth and slightly surpassing analyst expectations.

AWS is Amazon’s cloud computing arm and remains a major player in the global cloud infrastructure market.

AWS generated US$10.2 billion in operating income for the quarter, below the consensus estimate of US$10.9 billion.

Amazon announced plans to open a new AWS data center region in Chile before 2027.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Market leadership becomes harder to maintain as cloud computing matures

AWS’s 18% growth, while solid, reflects the mathematical reality that maintaining high growth rates becomes increasingly difficult as market share and revenue base expand.

Historical data shows this pattern clearly: AWS held 34% market share in 2017 while Microsoft Azure held just 11%. By 2018-2019, Microsoft was gaining ground with growth rates of 73-97% compared to AWS’s 41-49%12.

This dynamic is evident today, with Microsoft’s 39% cloud growth and Google’s 32% growth both outpacing AWS’s 18%, despite AWS generating $30.87 billion in quarterly revenue compared to Microsoft’s annual cloud figure of $75 billion.

The challenge for AWS is that each percentage point of additional market share requires capturing customers from an increasingly competitive landscape.

Microsoft has been particularly effective at this, growing from 10% to 15% market share between 2017-2018 while AWS’s share remained relatively stable around 33-34%2.

2️⃣ AI spending drives cloud infrastructure demand across all major providers

The simultaneous strong performance across AWS, Microsoft, and Google Cloud reflects how AI workloads are expanding the total addressable market rather than just redistributing existing demand.

Microsoft reported that over 85% of Fortune 500 companies are now using their AI solutions, with IDC predicting AI investments will generate $22.3 trillion in cumulative global impact by 20303.

This AI-driven demand expansion explains why all three providers can report strong growth simultaneously, as companies are increasing their overall cloud spending rather than simply switching providers.
