AWS partners with US energy firm to explore nuclear power

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has entered a partnership with Dominion Energy, Virginia’s utility provider, to investigate the potential for developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) near the North Anna nuclear power station.

This venture is a strategic response to AWS’s increasing power demands for its data centers, particularly as it expands its services in genAI.

AWS plans to invest over US$500 million in nuclear energy, joining Google and Microsoft in exploring this energy source.

According to AWS CEO Matthew Garman, these new reactors are expected to contribute at least 300 megawatts to support Virginia’s growing infrastructure.
