AWS genAI boss Vasi Philomin departs after eight years

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the departure of Vasi Philomin, vice president overseeing its generative AI (genAI) initiatives.

Philomin, who spent eight years at the company, confirmed via email that he is moving to another organization, without disclosing details.

His exit comes as Amazon boosts its AI efforts, including an US$8 billion investment in Anthropic and the launch of its Nova and Sonic models.

Amazon said that Rajesh Sheth, previously leading Amazon Elastic Block Store, will take over some of Philomin’s responsibilities.

Philomin played a major role in shaping AWS’s generative AI strategy and foundation models, including Amazon Titan.

He contributed to the development of Amazon Bedrock and was a frequent speaker at AWS events.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The intensifying AI talent war reaches new heights amid limited supply

Amazon’s loss of AI executive Philomin reflects the extraordinary competition for experienced AI leadership across the tech industry.

The global pool of qualified AI research scientists is estimated at fewer than 1,000 individuals, creating significant leverage for these specialists in the job market 1.

This scarcity has driven compensation to extraordinary levels, with AI researchers at startups receiving stock grants ranging from $2 million to $4 million, while established companies offer base salaries well into six figures with substantial bonuses 1.

The competition has become so fierce that Meta reportedly offered up to $100 million in signing bonuses to attract talent from OpenAI, demonstrating the premium companies place on experienced AI leaders 2.

CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg are personally involved in recruitment efforts, showing how securing top AI talent has become a C-suite priority rather than just an HR function 1.

2️⃣ Amazon’s dual AI strategy: external investment while building internal capabilities

While Amazon works to strengthen its generative AI position against early leaders like OpenAI and Google, its $8 billion investment in Anthropic represents a strategic hedge.
