Avendus invests $34.2m in Indian pharma services firm Aragen

Avendus Future Leaders Fund has led a 300 crore rupee (US$34.2 million) investment in Aragen Life Sciences, an Indian contract research, development, and manufacturing organization, with participation from SBI Life Insurance.

The investment was made through Avendus’s third fund and involved acquiring a minority stake in Aragen.

Founded in 2001, Aragen offers research and manufacturing services for pharmaceuticals, including both small molecules and biologics.

This is the second investment for Avendus Future Leaders Fund III, after its earlier stake in La Renon Healthcare.

Avendus Future Leaders Fund manages more than 3,750 crore rupee (US$428 million) in assets and invests in late-stage companies across various sectors.

Aragen’s board includes major investors like Goldman Sachs and Quadria.

In May 2025, Avendus exited its investment in Juspay Technologies, showing active management of its portfolio.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s CDMO market is experiencing unprecedented global demand

This investment comes at a pivotal moment when India’s contract development and manufacturing market is projected to nearly triple from $15.63 billion in 2023 to $44.63 billion by 20291.

The surge is driven by a 50% year-on-year increase in requests for proposals from global pharmaceutical companies seeking alternatives to traditional manufacturing hubs2.

India’s competitive advantage extends beyond cost, offering services approximately 20% lower than Chinese competitors while maintaining quality through around 650 USFDA-approved plants12.

The country already produces 20% of the world’s generic drugs and 60% of the global vaccine supply, positioning it as a critical player in global pharmaceutical supply chains3.

2️⃣ Premium CDMOs focusing on complex molecules command higher valuations

Aragen’s positioning in “complex technology platforms” and support for both small molecules and biologics reflects the industry’s shift away from basic generics toward higher-value services.
