Macquarie Data Centres said on July 16 that it had exercised an option to buy a 34,200-square-metre site in Sydney’s Macquarie Park for A$240 million (US$167 million).

The company plans to build an engineering and technology campus alongside an about 200-megawatt data-center campus.

The company said the purchase is expected to complete in the coming weeks. Initial construction is targeted for late 2029, subject to planning, power, and other approvals.

The planned facility would expand Macquarie’s existing Sydney footprint of 67MW of IT load.

Macquarie said the campus will give students and researchers access to data-center, cybersecurity, AI, and cloud technologies through its partnership with Macquarie University.

The company also plans to use advanced air-cooling and closed-loop systems to reduce operational water use.

The broader Australian data-center market is projected to almost double in capacity by 2030.
