🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Impact venture capital faces funding headwinds despite long-term growth
007 Venture Partners launches its $5 million fund at a challenging time for purpose-driven investing, as venture capital funding for impact startups has declined for four consecutive years, with a projected 36% drop in 2023 compared to 2022 1.
This decline is significantly steeper than the 4% decrease in overall VC funding, indicating impact ventures have been disproportionately affected by the current investment climate 1.
Interestingly, European impact VC funding has shown better resilience than North American counterparts, experiencing only a 17% decline compared to North America’s 58% drop 1.
Despite these recent challenges, the long-term trajectory remains promising, with the impact investing market estimated at $228 billion in 2017 and projected to reach $1 trillion by 2025 2.
The fund’s explicit alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals follows a common trend among impact investors, though concerning data shows no SDGs are currently on track to be achieved by their 2030 target 3.
2️⃣ “No sacrifice” thesis gains traction as impact investments prove market-rate returns
007’s belief that purpose-driven companies can deliver both financial returns and social impact aligns with what industry veterans call the “No Sacrifice” philosophy, which maintains that investments can yield market-rate returns while achieving meaningful social benefits 4.
