Australian law firm Sprintlaw halves workforce as it shifts to AI
Australian law firm Sprintlaw has decreased its staff from over 60 to fewer than 30 while increasing its investment in AI, according to co-founder Alex Solo.
The firm, founded in 2017, offers online legal services to small businesses and was recognized by the Financial Times in 2023 as one of Asia-Pacific’s fastest-growing businesses.
The company raised US$2 million to support its AI initiatives, including the development of a voice-chat model named “Taylor AI.”
This tool allows new clients to interact with the platform similarly to how they would with a lawyer.
Some AI tools function like paralegals, integrating large language models with Sprintlaw’s legal data to enhance efficiency.
Solo said that AI adoption has enabled Sprintlaw to double its client numbers while decreasing its workforce. He highlighted that AI tools assist lawyers in drafting documents but require human review to ensure accuracy.
While AI has transformed Sprintlaw’s operations, Solo noted that it cannot yet replace experienced lawyers and still requires professional oversight for critical tasks.
